Information on Immunizations in California
California will continue to provide vaccines and screenings. In response to recent federal actions surrounding the CDC, several states on the West Coast formed an alliance to ensure the public has access and credible information to vaccine safety and efficacy.
- On September 3, 2025, Governor Newsom announced that California, along with Oregon and Washington, launched a new West Coast Health Alliance to provide evidence-based unified recommendations for residents regarding who should receive immunizations. Hawaii has since joined the alliance.
- On September 17, 2025, the California Department of Public Health announced official immunization recommendations in accordance with this Alliance.
- Recent enactment of Assembly Bill (AB) 144 (Budget Act of 2025) provides authority for pharmacists to independently initiate and administer an immunization that, on January 1, 2025, had in effect an ACIP recommendation and that are recommended by the California Department Public Health. AB 144 also contains provisions related to Medi-Cal coverage of vaccines and immunizations. Learn more about Medi-Cal coverage of vaccines here.
Details About This New Alliance
California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii share a commitment to ensuring that public health recommendations are guided by safety, efficacy, transparency, access, and trust. The Alliance will help safeguard scientific expertise by ensuring that public health policies in these states are informed by trusted scientists, clinicians, and other public health leaders. Through this partnership, the these states will start coordinating health guidelines by aligning immunization recommendations informed by respected national medical organizations. This will allow residents to receive consistent, science-based recommendations they can rely on — regardless of shifting federal actions.
In the coming weeks, the Alliance will finalize shared principles to strengthen public confidence in vaccines and in public health. While each state will independently pursue strategies shaped by their unique laws, geographies, histories, and peoples, these shared principles will form the foundations of the Alliance. Importantly, these states affirm and respect Tribal sovereignty, recognizing that Tribes maintain their sovereign authority over vaccine services.
